The Amazon rainforest has a tropical climate with high humidity and temperatures ranging from 77–95°F throughout the year. The dry season (less rain and fewer mosquitoes), from May to September, is the best time to visit the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. Typical gateway cities to the Amazon are Iquitos (IQT) and Puerto Maldonado (PEM). Iquitos can only be accessed by plane or riverboat, while Puerto Maldonado is the closest city to the Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve.
Award booking flights to Lima and the Peruvian Amazon
Alaska miles can be used to book a free one-way stopover in Lima on your way to the Peruvian Amazon (IQT or PEM airports). Iquitos has a lot more award flight availability compared to Puerto Maldonado (see images below).
Paying cash for flights from Lima to the Peruvian Amazon
Flights are reasonably priced (link) when paid with cash and it helps to save up Alaska miles for future trips.
Peruvian Amazon Accommodation
You must decide if you would like to stay at an all-inclusive jungle lodge either in Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian Amazon.
We ended up staying at a place called Enai and arranged to take day tours (see image below).
Conclusion
I recommend exploring Peru in September and the Amazon jungle can be added to the list, when you are exploring other attractions like Nazca Lines, Machu Picchu or Huascaran National Park.
