I am one of the few travelers who love to rent a car in Switzerland, where you are typically encouraged to take the train. However, it is not uncommon to see a very congested car rental area at Zurich airport.
How to avoid long lines at ZRH rental car counters
Every time I have rented a car at the Zurich (ZRH) airport, I have noticed long lines at the counters (10-15 people). However, there are usually only 1-2 passengers in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards dedicated line.
While I did not rent from Avis Preferred at Zurich airport, I have noticed a dedicated line for the Preferred members and it is worth comparing the prices with Hertz. However, I did not see a clearly marked line for National Emerald members at Zurich airport.
I recommend that readers use their complimentary elite status with either Hertz or Avis to rent a car with dedicated check-out lines at Zurich airport. However, only Hertz Gold Plus Rewards President’s Circle status gives you guaranteed worldwide upgrades. You must be a member of Avis President’s Club to get free complimentary upgrades in Europe.

How to get free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status
If you work for a large company, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status could be part of your free employee perks, so I recommend checking your employee travel benefits portal.
Amex Platinum and Capital One Venture X give you complimentary Hertz Gold Plus Rewards President’s Circle status, while the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa only gives you free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status.
I have a regularly updated post about My Experience with Hertz Gold Plus Rewards President’s Circle (review).
Conclusion
If you have premium travel credit cards like Platinum, Venture X and Atmos Summit, you are eligible for a complimentary elite status with Hertz, Avis and National car rental companies. Renting through this elite status will help you get your car faster at Zurich airport.
