Longmen Grottoes is a cave complex containing more than 2,000 grottoes, 100,000 Buddhist statues (size ranges from several centimeters to over 50 feet), and over 2,800 carved inscriptions. Longman Grottoes were carved into the steep limestone cliffs of Mount Longmen and Mount Xiang over the course of five centuries beginning in 493 CE. The most prominent statue of the Longman Grottoes is Vairocana Buddha sitting on the eight-square lotus throne (featured image) along with two side statues of Buddha’s disciples, Kasyapa and Ananda. Longmen Grottoes are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and Luoyang Beijiao Airport (LYA) is the nearest airport for international visitors.

Conclusion

Longmen Grottoes must be ranked highest among the famous grottoes in China (e.g., Yungang and Mogao Caves) and I encourage all the travelers to include them during a trip to China.
