If you use either Amex Platinum or Amex Green card to pay renewal fees for CLEAR PLUS membership, they will cover the entire annual fee ($189) for the primary member. If you create a family account, you will be responsible for paying an additional membership fee ($119) for each person added.

Several of us have more than one Platinum card (or a Green card) in the family and it makes sense to take advantage of the CLEAR credit on two cards to cover the entire bill.

My CLEAR PLUS Membership

I got a $30 discount for having a United Mileage Plus credit card and linking the account with CLEAR PLUS.

How do I split the CLEAR PLUS payment between two Platinum cards?

This is not a straightforward process and involves several steps listed below.

  • You must make note of your renewal due date (create a calendar reminder). For example, my CLEAR renewal date is September 12th of every year.
  • Remove the family member from the plan before the default credit card is charged.
  • Wait for the credit card charge to go through for your primary membership on the date of renewal.
  • Replace the default credit card with a second Platinum or Green card.
  • Add the member back to the family account.
  • Pay the membership fee with the new credit card that was added to the account.
  • Repeat the same steps the following year to split the membership fees between two credit cards (same or different cards).
  • When you change your payment method, it shows “Update in progress” under your payment information (see image below). DO NOT reactivate a family member’s account until the update is completed.

Refresh the screen after 5 minutes and the payment screen will show the updated credit card information. You can reactivate your family member and the $119 fee will be charged on the new card (see image below).

Split credit card payment receipts

The split payments on two different credit cards will appear in the “receipts” section (see images below).

Can you call CLEAR customer service to split the payment?

If you call CLEAR customer service (855-253-2763), they will tell you to follow the same steps listed above since they are not allowed to take credit card numbers over the phone.

Conclusion

If you have more than one Amex Platinum or Green card in your household, you must take advantage of the CLEAR PLUS credits by paying for additional family members. CLEAR sends you an email a month before the renewal date which gives you plenty of time to properly follow the steps outlined above.
