We started our journey to Scotland and Scandinavia by staying one night at Thompson Houston and taking Singapore Airlines to Manchester to experience the SCHLOSS Roxburghe hotel (review link).
Award Booking Thompson Houston
I used 17K Hyatt points to book the King Bedroom a few months before our trip date. I was curious to see the types of suites available at this hotel for possible upgrades (see image below).
Uber to Thompson Houston
Thompson Houston offers valet parking for $55 per night (free for globalists with points booking), but we did not have a rental car on this trip. From the airport, I had to manually enter the hotel address “1717 Allen Pkwy, Houston, TX 77019” since the hotel name did not auto-populate in the Uber App.
Check-in at Thompson Houston
Once you get off at the 1st floor lobby, you have to take the elevators to the 7th floor for checking in at the front desk. For being a Hyatt Globalist, our room was initially upgraded to a “Corner Studio Suite” by the front desk staff member. However, when I requested for the 4PM late check-out, they further upgraded us to the “Sky Suite” since the corner studio suite was not available for a late check-out. We were happy to receive the upgrade and headed to the 14th floor to find our suite.
Thompson Houston Sky Suite
The Sky Suite lives up to its name with an open sky view from the small seating area and a wall separating the windows from the bedroom. The queen mattress was comfortable, but pillows were too thin without much neck support. The shower construction and the materials were beautiful, but the shower head was flimsy (I wish they installed a rainfall shower head). We were greeted with the beautiful morning sun and Houston skyline view the next morning.
Breakfast
The hotel enforces a breakfast price cap of $100 per room for globalists. While the menu prices are reasonable, it is easy to exceed the cap amount when visiting with more than one family member. We ordered scrambled eggs, sausage along with some waffles which tasted very good and the service was excellent.
Swimming Pool & Sun Deck
Thompson Houston has fabulous looking sun deck with panoramic views of the city skyline and a large infinity swimming pool (heated in the winter months) with cabanas.
Spa & Fitness Center
We did not go into the spa area, but the gym is fully equipped along with a refrigerator containing water bottles and cold towels. There was a nice water station to fill-up your water bottles next to the toilets. The Thompson branded water bottles are very well made with a pleasant green color and we felt sad throwing the empty bottles into the recycle bin.
Conclusion
Thompson Houston is a wonderful place to stay when visiting Houston and is well worth the Uber price for a one-night stay (instead of an airport hotel), especially if you have a late evening flight. The guaranteed 4PM late check out worked out very well to catch our Singapore Airlines IAH-MAN flight.
