Glacier Lodge Eqi (in West Greenland, about 50 miles north of Ilulissat) is one of the Arctic’s most remote, dramatic, and historically rich eco-lodges.

Deep Roots in Polar Exploration History
Long before it became a wilderness lodge, Eqi served as the primary expedition base for the famous French polar explorer Paul-Émile Victor. Between 1948 and 1953, Victor used this specific site as a gateway to launch major scientific expeditions onto the massive Greenland Ice Sheet. His original base cabin still stands next to the lodge, and visitors can still find old handwritten notes and historical relics pinned to the walls inside. The lodge’s central gathering hub, Café Victor, is named in his honor.
Off-the-Grid Sustainability
Due to its isolated location, the lodge operates entirely off-the-grid.
- Power: The lodge generates electricity for the cabins primarily through solar panels, with a backup generator.
- Water: Fresh drinking water is sourced directly from a pristine mountain lake nearby.
- Digital Detox: The accommodations and grounds are intentionally Wi-Fi-free, letting guests disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.
A Glacier-View Sauna
One of the lodge’s standout modern features is its panoramic sauna, which faces the fjord and the calving glacier. Guests can reserve the sauna for an additional cost.
Prime Arctic Wildlife & Midnight Sun
Because the lodge operates only during the short summer window (typically mid-June to mid-September), guests experience the Midnight Sun, with daylight stretching around the clock. This endless light enables late-night wildlife spotting (including Arctic foxes, hares, muskoxen on land, and seals or whales in the water) and clear, quiet evening hikes to the edge of the massive inland ice sheet.
How close is the lodge to the glacier?
The lodge sits just about 800 meters away from the face of the Eqi Glacier (Eqip Sermia), one of Greenland’s most active glaciers. Because it moves and calves so frequently, guests are almost guaranteed to hear loud, thunder-like cracks and see massive chunks of ice break off and crash into the fjord.
How long does it take to reach the lodge?
Reaching Glacier Lodge Eqi takes a scenic, several-hour boat journey from Ilulissat through Disko Bay. The initial boat journey to the lodge takes longer (~5 hours), as the boat stops at the Eqi Glacier for over an hour so passengers can view the calving glacier and take pictures. The return journey to Ilulissat takes around 2-3 hours, depending on the type of boat used to transport passengers.

Can you easily get to the lodge with large suitcases?
No. Getting to the lodge requires climbing several uphill stairs (see image below) and walking a long distance across a wooden walkway to reach the cabins. The more you pay, the longer you walk, since the luxury cabins sit at the edge of a cliff for uninterrupted glacier views. We have seen a few visitors with impaired mobility and others who brought large suitcases, struggling to take the stairs. No one will help you or your luggage get to your cabin, so you must rely on friends and family.

What should you pack for the stay at the lodge?
Since most travelers spend one to two nights at the lodge, packing some hiking clothes and bathroom essentials in a backpack is highly recommended.
Key Booking Considerations
- Boat Transfers: Unless booked as part of an all-inclusive package, the mandatory round-trip boat transfer from Ilulissat (roughly 3–5 hours each way) costs an additional ~DKK 2,245 per adult.
- Single Supplements: Standard pricing is usually based on double occupancy. Travelers booking a private cabin alone typically pay a single supplement surcharge.
- Short Season: The lodge is only open during the Arctic summer (mid-June to mid-September). Due to high demand and limited capacity, bookings often open 10–12 months in advance.
Insect Activity & Best Timing at Glacier Lodge Eqi
| Time Period | Bug Severity Level | Primary Insects Present | What to Expect & Why |
| Early to Mid-June (Season Opening) | Very Low | Few to none (early emerging mosquitoes) | Ideal window. Temperatures are still cool, and snowmelt is fresh. Mosquito larvae have not fully hatched in large numbers yet. |
| Late June to Mid-July | High (Peak Mosquito) | Arctic Mosquitoes | Worst period. Warmer temperatures and standing meltwater cause massive hatches. Use bug spray and a head net when hiking inland off the coast. |
| Late July to Early August | Moderate to High | Mosquitoes & Black Flies | Mosquito numbers begin to taper, but non-biting or biting black flies hatch. Bug spray is less effective against flies, making head nets essential. |
| Mid-August to Mid-September (Season Close) | Very Low to None | Minimal / Dying off | Best window. Nighttime temperatures drop near freezing, killing off most insects. Excellent for bug-free hiking, with early autumn colors and night skies returning. |

Sample Booking Prices for 2027 Summer Season

Should you book these cabins early or late?
If you plan to visit the lodge in high season, you must book as early as possible. We stayed at the lodge during the off-peak season and enjoyed great weather with no mosquitoes or flies. We booked one of the Deluxe Cabins for two nights and paid significantly less money by waiting until 2 weeks before the arrival date (see image below). If you use Rove Miles or Citi Strata Elite, you can earn 12X points for this booking.

How comfortable are the luxury cabins?
The luxury cabins are surprisingly comfortable, with running hot water in the shower and a flushable toilet. A wall-mounted air conditioner keeps you cool during the hot summer months. The mattress is very comfortable, and the room has two side tables and electric outlets for charging your devices. The room includes a couch. The patio has an unbelievable view of the Eqi Glacier (see image below).

Cafeteria
- At check-in, you must choose the time you plan to eat dinner for the duration of your stay.
- Breakfast (8-10 AM) serves muesli, premade scrambled eggs, bread, and fresh fruits along with an assortment of teas.
- Lunch is prepacked at breakfast, and you can grab it and go for the hikes.
- Dinner has a fixed 3-course menu, and the chef accommodates vegetarians and guests with food allergies.
- The cafeteria has a small snack bar where you can purchase some candy bars, chips, and sodas.

How does the food taste?
We enjoyed breakfast and the packed-lunch sandwich more than dinner, but it depends on how much you love seafood.

How many nights should you stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi?
If you’re not interested in hiking, I recommend staying only one night. Check-out is at 10 AM, and if you’re not hiking on departure day, you’ll have to sit in the cafeteria for 3+ hours.
I recommend staying 2 nights if you want to do all three hikes in the area (see table below). You can finish the Delta hike (the shortest of the three) on the day you check in, then do Paul-Émile Victor’s hike (the longest) on the second day, and save the third hike for the day of departure.
Guided Hikes Around Glacier Lodge Eqi
| Hike / Excursion Name | Distance (Round-Trip) | Duration & Difficulty | Estimated Price (Per Person) | Description & Highlights |
| Hike to the Delta | ~4.3 – 5 miles (7 – 8 km) | 3–4 hours (Difficulty: Easy / Level 1) | DKK 350 – 375 (~$50 – $55 USD) | A gentle backcountry walk through the Arctic valley to the local river delta, where meltwater from the ice cap flows into the fjord. |
| Morning Departure Nature Walk | ~1.5 – 2.5 miles (2.5 – 4 km) | 4 hours (Difficulty: Moderate / Level 2) | FREE (Included for lodge guests) | A morning guided trek is typically scheduled on the day of departure, exploring the immediate coastal terrain and local flora/fauna. |
| Glacier Moraine Viewpoint Hike | ~6.5 – 7.5 miles (10.4–12 km) | 4–5 hours (Difficulty: Moderate / Level 3) | DKK 600 – 750 (~$85 – $110 USD) | A popular mid-length hike along the fjord and over rocky terrain to the top of the glacial moraine, offering expansive views of the calving ice wall. |
| Historic Route to the Inland Ice (Paul-Émile Victor’s Route) | ~11 – 12.5 miles (18 – 20 km) | 8–10 hours (Difficulty: Strenuous / Level 4) | DKK 1,250 (~$180 USD) | An advanced, full-day trek. It scales the moraine ridges to the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet. |

Conclusion
Glacier Lodge Eqi accommodation is as remote as it gets, deep in the Arctic with a clear view of the thundering & calving Eqi glacier. It is expensive, but the prices are not higher than several all-inclusive safari lodges in Masai Mara. If you are traveling all the way to Ilulissat as part of your bucket list, I highly recommend staying at Glacier Lodge Eqi.
