Ilimanaq Lodge stands out as one of the most unique eco-luxury properties in the Arctic, combining high-end design with remote wilderness and deep cultural roots. The journey to the lodge is an experience in itself: no roads lead to Ilimanaq, and guests arrive via a scenic boat shuttle that weaves directly through the towering icebergs of the Ilulissat Icefjord.

Unique Aspects of Ilimanaq Lodge
The aspects that make Ilimanaq Lodge uniquely special include:
- Cliffside Eco-Bungalows with Floor-to-Ceiling Views: The lodge consists of 15 minimalist, Scandinavian-designed cabins built on a rugged cliffside.
- Each bungalow features massive, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and private wooden terraces facing Disko Bay, letting guests watch whales breach and colossal icebergs drift past from their beds.
- Innovative Renewable Energy Integration: Built as a pioneering sustainability project, all cabins operate entirely on solar energy.
- World-Class Local Gastronomy: Despite being located in a tiny, remote settlement of around 50 permanent residents, the lodge features a celebrated gourmet restaurant that champions high-end Greenlandic cuisine, utilizing hyper-local ingredients like muskox, local fish, and hand-foraged Arctic botanicals.
- Authentic Settlement Immersion: Unlike isolated resorts cut off from civilization, Ilimanaq Lodge is fully integrated into a living, traditional Inuit settlement.
- Guests can walk down gravel paths to interact with residents, visit the village shop, and experience authentic village life, all within steps of luxury comforts like private, modern indoor bathrooms.
Our Accommodation at Ilimanq Lodge
We stayed two nights at the Comfort Bungalow, Ocean View, and the prices are surprisingly low since the stay includes a free boat shuttle from Ilulissat and breakfast. The boat ride to the lodge was breathtaking, with several tall icebergs in Disko Bay.

Ilimanaq Lodge Breakfast & Dinner
The lodge’s free breakfast was fantastic, with a variety of muesli, bread assortments, fresh fruit, and boiled eggs. You can also purchase packaged sandwiches for hikes for $30 USD.
At Ilimanaq Lodge, dining takes place at Restaurant Egede, set inside Poul Egede’s restored 18th-century historic house. Dinner costs depend on the package booked and the restaurant concept operating that season.
Tasting Menu: Typically ranges from DKK 600 to DKK 1,200 per person (~$85–$175 USD) for a multi-course meal featuring Greenlandic seafood, game, and local botanicals.

Can you see the Northern Lights from Ilimanaq Lodge?
Yes, Ilimanaq Lodge is directly beneath the Auroral Oval (Northern Lights belt). At approximately 69°N latitude in Disko Bay, Ilimanaq sits well within the primary band of high geomagnetic activity, but aurora viewing depends entirely on the season.
1. Seasonal Operating Dates (The Main Factor)
- Summer Season (June – August): You cannot see the Northern Lights during the main summer operating season. Because Ilimanaq is located far north of the Arctic Circle, it experiences the 24-hour Midnight Sun throughout the summer, meaning the sky never gets dark enough for the lights to be visible.
- Autumn Season (Late August – September/October): As darkness returns in late August, the Northern Lights become visible at night. Early autumn—before the lodge closes for the winter season—offers a unique opportunity to enjoy both comfortable lodge accommodations and nighttime aurora displays.
2. Why Ilimanaq is an Exceptional Aurora Location
When the night skies are dark (late August through winter), Ilimanaq provides near-perfect conditions for viewing the Northern Lights:
- Zero Light Pollution: Ilimanaq is a tiny settlement of about 50 residents with virtually no streetlights or light pollution, creating pitch-black skies.
- Unobstructed Panoramic Views: The cliffside eco-cabins feature massive floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor terraces facing west over Disko Bay. You can watch the green and purple light dance across the dark sky directly above floating icebergs right from your bed or private deck.
However, despite visiting the lodge in early September, we did not see any Northern Lights.
